Facebook buys startup(e-mail prioritizer MailRank)

With an aim to expand its services on smartphones, social networking giant Facebook has acquired MailRank, a year-old startup firm focused on prioritizing e-mail, for an undisclosed amount.
MailRank prioritizes e-mail so that the user can focus on the content that really matters. The company is considered as solution to the problem of e-mail overload.
The two co-founders of MailRank, Bryan O'Sullivan and Bethanye McKinney Blount, will join Facebook as per the deal.
"We are thrilled to announce that MailRank's co-founders will be joining Facebook in December...We'll be discontinuing the private beta of MailRank for outlook to focus on our new jobs," MailRank said in its official blog.
However, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Earlier this month, Facebook acquired mobile application developer Strobe for an undisclosed amount.
Strobe develops technology which help developers create and distribute applications that work on devices like smartphones and tablet PCs.
Some reports suggested that the Strobe acquisition was a talent hire, as Facebook was mainly interested in the company's founder Charles Jolley.
He is also the creator of the SproutCore open source framework. Before founding Strobe, Charles was responsible for mobile application development at technology giant Apple Inc.

Facebook probing 'porn'

Facebook said on Tuesday it is investigating reports that some members of the social network were receiving graphic images in their news feeds.
"Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms," Facebook said in a statement.
"We have recently experienced an increase in reports and we are investigating and addressing the issue," Facebook said.
Graham Cluley of computer security firm Sophos said in a blog post that the images appearing in the news feeds of some Facebook users included 'explicit hardcore porn images' and 'pictures of extreme violence'.
"It seems highly offensive spam content has successfully spread via Facebook for 24 hours or more," Cluley said, adding that it not immediately clear how it was being spread.
"What's clear, however, is that mischief-makers are upsetting many Facebook users and making the social networking site far from a family-friendly place," he said.
A number of Facebook users took to Twitter to complain that their news feeds had been invaded by pornographic and violent images.
Facebook is the world's largest social network with more than 800 million members.

Facebook stopped most of the spam ?

Facebook has said that it has stopped most of the spam that has flooded many users' pages with pictures showing graphic sex and violence.
The social-networking company urged its 800 million-plus users on Wednesday to remain vigilant to keep their accounts from being hijacked.
That includes reporting suspicious links on friends' pages and not clicking on links that offer deals that are too good to be true.
Social-networking sites are popular targets for spammers because people are more likely to trust and share content that comes from people they know.
This makes spam, scams and viruses easy to spread.
Still, Facebook says less than 4 per cent of content shared on the site is spam.
By comparison, about 74 per cent of email is spam, according to security firm Symantec, though the bulk gets filtered out before reaching the inbox.
Over the past couple of days, many users have complained about finding links on their Facebook pages taking them to images depicting jarring violence and graphic pornography.
Although the way the latest spam messages are spread isn't new, their content is more shocking than the typical scam enticing a free iPod shuffle.
The latest attack tricked users into clicking on links by offering some sort of promise - free plane tickets, a fun new video or answers to a quiz, for example, said Vikram Thakur, principal security response manager at Symantec. Clicking on the link took users to a page that asked them to copy and paste a line of malicious JavaScript programming code into the address bar of their Web browser.
"Pasting that little message will pick up a message or picture from whatever website the JavaScript is posting to," Thakur said, adding that it doesn't matter what type of browser people use. The content is then posted on the users' Facebook page, usually without their knowledge. It spreads further when their friends then click on those links, thinking that it was posted by the user on purpose.
Facebook said no user data or accounts were compromised during the attack.
It urged users not to cut and paste unknown code into a browser's address bar. They should always use an up-to-date browser and report any suspicious content on the site.
"Our team responded quickly and we have eliminated most of the spam caused by this attack," Facebook said in a statement.
"We are now working to improve our systems to better defend against similar attacks in the future."

Facebook, Google+, unthink, Chime and Diaspora a Review

Do you have a question which social networking is the best?
Facebook or Google+ or Unthink or Chime or Diaspora or twitter or linkedin or orkut
just read through................

After Diaspora, Chime and Google+ got considerable acceptance from users who are annoyed by Facebook’s intrusiveness and privacy gaffes, another challenger, Unthink, was recently launched.
Unthink promises that users will control their own information. However, the key to popularity is utility, swear users.
Facebook is all about utility. It is not a platform for socialising anymore. It has grown to be a multi-utility centre. So what makes Facebook a tough competition and what can its rivals do to stay in the race?
Karthik Naralasetty, founder Redcode says, “Facebook is at a point where there probably never will be a ‘Facebook killer’ like there was a ‘Myspace killer’. People cite privacy concerns when talking about why Facebook will eventually fall, but they’re ignoring the fact that the majority of Facebook users don’t really care. One should also remember that for a huge segment of Internet users, Facebook essentially is the Internet. They use Facebook for instant messaging, mailing, sharing pictures, links and almost everything. These people will never jump ship because if they do, they will lose a lot.”
When Facebook came into our lives, it focused on personal information and social connections forming a network starting with college communities. It had news feed and photo tagging, which were novel and people kept coming to the site.
At a time of crummy user interfaces (remember Orkut?), Facebook provided a refreshing change, says texpert Rachit Kinger, who has worked with a tech magazine.
He says, “Facebook reinvented itself a lot. If you have a snapshot of the original Facebook versus what it is now, you will be surprised at how it has evolved, in fact your Facebook page from six months ago to what it is now is a lot different. That is constant innovation. Not just great stuff to keep people occupied, Facebook is a great user interface and a complete experience.”
Marketing executive Pawan Verma adds that Facebook will always keep itself ahead in the race not just because of the utility factor or the kind of services on offer.
“Linkedin, Google+, Orkut and others tried to replicate the model, but failed to provide the experience of totality. Facebook provides everything under one roof. And as far as intrusiveness is concerned, it has enough applications to safeguard yours.”
Finally Karthik suggests that new entrants should focus on one feature and build a platform around it to stay afloat.
“If you look at Twitter, it works around one thing — status updates. Maybe you could just work on the photo sharing like Flickr. These are all features of Facebook but presented in a different environment. You could build a system just around ‘events’ and make it social,” concludes Karthik.

SLEEP DISODERS DRIVE BPO STAFFS TO DRUGS

Erratic sleep pattern also push BPO workers into alcohol and narcotics abuse, the study done by a group of sleep specialists headed by Dr. Suri, president of indian Sleep Disorders Association has shown.
Around 40.6 percent of BPO employees smoke, 35.9 percent of of them indulge in over two drinks/week as against 2.1 of day workers and 26.7 percent use narcotics drugs, when compared to 4.1 percent in the contolled group.
"These young people have to work when thier bodies want to sleep and they have to sleep when thier bodies are awke to face the day. As a result, they resort to consuming stimulants like cofee and energy drinks through out the night, and use alcohol or sedatives to put them to sleep during the day"
explains Dr. Suri the main authority author of study, pointing out that the body's biological clock is wound according to sunlight.

THE QUALITY OF SLEEP DURING THE DAY CANNOT MATCH THE DEEP SLEEP OF THE NIGHT, SAYS DR. SURI.

"When one travels to US, it takes 10 days for the body to get accomstomed to the time difference. But BPO employees living in India and working permanently on US time cannot adapt to the timings as the body clock is programmed, both genetically as well as habit from birth, to remain active during the day time," explains Dr. Suri

A former employee of a BPO, Richard, narrates how he got into major accidents, just three months apart, because he dozed off while riding his bike. "I used to work between 10pm to 4 am, and having a few drinks with my colleagues on the terrace of my saidapet office became a ritual. That was the only bit of social life we had, plus it helped us sleep," he admits.
The first time he dozed off while returning home to chrompet, he crashed into medium and hit his head. luckily, he escaped with broken shoulder and two small clots on his head. The second time, barely a month after he resumed working, Richard broke his leg, and rammed into an elderly pedestrain, who fractured an arm."That was when i decided that i could not cope with this job," he said.

81.1% OF BPO STAFF DEPRESSED SAYS STUDY

The pay may be great and perks aplenty, but India's night shift BPO employeees seem to be trading thier sleep for a whole lot of health problems.
According to the country's first randomized controlled study on BPO employees, tose wo work te graveyard shift are falling prey to depression, anxiety and substance abuse because thier inbuilt biological clock is unable to cope with thier erratic, abnormal sleep-wake patterns.
A group of sleep specialists headed by Dr J.CSuri, president of the Indian sleep disorders Association, conducted the study on two groups of subjects from NEw Delhi, aged between 19 and 37 years - the control group that pusued day jobs - and the study group that worked night shifts at call centers and BPOs catering to the US.
The statistics are disturbig. A high 81.1% of BPO employees showed symptoms of depression, as against 14.8 % of the day workers.
